Speaking Monday, 17 August 2026 during the orientation session of the second cohort of 2026 Post – Graduate intake in Blantyre, Associate Professor Bakuwa highlighted the importance of orientation in helping students make a smooth transition into postgraduate studies. She reminded students that understanding and adhering to university policies and academic guidelines are essential to their success.

“Orientation provides the necessary information required throughout your studies and outlines how the institution supports you to facilitate learning,” Bakuwa said.

She urged students to familiarise themselves with the university’s regulations, stressing that ignorance of the rules would not be accepted as an excuse for misconduct.

“Ignorance of the rules will not be accepted as an excuse, and every student is accountable for their actions,” she said.

Echoing the call for accountability, Associate Professor Christabel Kambala, Chairperson of the MUBAS Institutional Integrity Committee, issued a strong warning against academic bribery and other corrupt practices.

Associate Professor Kambala expressed concern over attempts by some postgraduate students to bypass academic standards through unethical means. She cautioned that engaging in bribery or corruption to gain academic success undermines the university’s standards and could attract serious penalties.

“Integrity is paramount. Postgraduate students must avoid negligence and refrain from engaging in corrupt practices or offering bribes to excel in their studies,” Kambala stated.

The orientation programme also featured presentations from key university officials, including Dr. Kanyomwa, Dr. Gertrude Sitolo, and Mrs. Yamikani Chilinde. The presenters provided students with information on the administrative and academic processes, as well as student support services available across the university.

The programme is intended to equip new postgraduate students with the knowledge and guidance they need to navigate their studies successfully while upholding the academic and ethical standards of MUBAS.
