Osman who was accompanied by some councilors and officials from the council, led the exercise from the front, sweeping and clearing trash all around the campus before extending the exercise to some surrounding areas, including the Masauko Chipembere Highway, all the way to Ginnery Corner Round About.
‘’The cleaning exercise organized by these students augurs well with my vision of making Blantyre the cleanest city in this country and I am excited to partner them in this initiative, I have always said that I don’t have a classmate but now these are my classmates because we share the same passion for cleanliness,’’ said Osman.
He also disclosed that the council will soon launch a cleanliness competition for universities in the city as one way of promoting cleanliness on universities’ campuses in the city.
The mayor said as future leaders, students have an important role in creating a clean and sustainable environment.
‘’ This exercise should not just be a one-off initiative, but we should relentlessly undertake to create a clean and sustainable environment for ourselves and the future generations of this country,’’ advised Osman.
In his remarks, President of the Students Representative Council Francis Magwaza said the students are committed to working with the BCC in promoting cleanliness in the city. He said the student body will ensure that the university is keeping high standards of hygiene and sanitation all the time.
The cleaning exercise was conducted with support from NBS Bank.
