PIC: Dr Madalitso Tsakama delivers his opening remarks during the launch of MUBAS Innovation Talk series
29 August 2025 marked another chapter for Malawian innovators as the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) launched Innovation Talk Series at the University Innovation Pod (Unipod) in Blantyre.

Speaking during the launch, Head of Research and Innovation at MUBAS, Dr. Madalitso Tsakama said the initiative seeks to stimulate discussions on innovations that can spur economic development for the country.

‘’These series will bring together students, industry leaders, innovators and entrepreneurs to exchange ideas, lessons and possibilities in order to cultivate an innovation and entrepreneurship mindset in the country,’’ said Tsakama.

He added that each session during the series will have a unique theme to promote diversity of ideas and relevant topical issues.

‘’Through these series, innovators and entrepreneurs will discuss a number of topics including technological advancements, business, intellectual property and policy dialogue,’’ added Tsakama.

UniPod Manager, Francis Masi said the UniPod is a one- stop- centre for innovation in the country as it provides a platform for mentorship, prototyping and product development and he encouraged all innovators in the country to fully utilize the space in order to turn their ideas into tangible products.

‘’ Apart from helping innovators to develop their products here, we will also be assisting in protecting their intellectual property so that they can benefit from their innovations,’’ Masi said.

Speaking during the inaugural innovation talk session dubbed ‘How they build it’, Guest of Honour Dr. Wisely Phiri, who is also Managing Director of Sparc Systems Limited and President of Malawi Chambers of Commerce and Industry (MCCI) advised up-and-coming innovators against using short cuts on their entrepreneurial journey. Drawing on his own experience, Phiri said only perseverance, dedication and work provide an assurance to success.

‘’ Do not always look for personal connections to overcome barriers, what you bring to the table through your work is what will distinguish you from the rest,’’ advised Phiri.

The inaugural event also featured Guest Speaker Schizzo Thomson who gave an insightful presentation on innovation and entrepreneurship. The Innovation Talk Series will be held on the last Friday of every month.
