Postgraduate Programmes Faculty of Engineering 2021 Intake

The Polytechnic, a Constituent College of the University of Malawi, Faculty of Engineering is inviting applications for the following Postgraduate Programmes which will commence in September, 2021.

1.DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY (PhD) 

  1. PhD  Engineering (Industrial Management)
  2. PhD  Engineering (Infrastructure Development and Management)
  3. PhD  Engineering (Power and Machines)
  4. PhD  Engineering (Telecommunications)
  5. PhD  Engineering (Sustainable Engineering Management)
  6. PhD  Engineering (Transport Systems)

2.MASTER OF PHILOSOPHY IN ENGINEERING (MPhil)

  1. MPhil in Engineering (Industrial Management)
  2. MPhil in Engineering (Infrastructure Development & Management)
  3. MPhil in Engineering (Power and Machines)
  4. MPhil in Engineering (Telecommunications)
  5. MPhil in Engineering ( Transport Systems)

Candidates for PhD programmes must have a relevant Master’s or MPhil degree from recognized institutions while for MPhil, the candidate must have an Honour’s degree in the First or Upper Second Division or a Bachelor’s degree with at least a Credit or a Strong Pass of 55% -59%.  Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree will be required to accumulate 60 credits of taught modules relevant to the selected MPhil research area. The durations for PhD and MPhil programmes are 3 and 2.5 years, respectively.

Fees and Expenses

  • US$10, 000 (Paid in MK Equivalent) for the whole programme of PhD will cater for supervision and examination costs with an indicative figure of US $ 4,500 for research, and;
  • US$5,500 (Paid in MK Equivalent) for the whole programme of MPhil will cater for tuition, supervision and examination costs with an indicative figure of US$3,500 for research.

 

A complete PhD or MPhil application must include: 

  1. A non-refundable application fee of MK10,000 for Malawian applicants and US$25.00 for international applicants; 
  2. A completed postgraduate application form; 
  3. A certified academic transcripts of all previous university courses taken including percentage scores where necessary; 
  4. Certified copies of relevant certificates; 
  5. An abstract of master’s research or dissertation; 
  6. A concept paper relating to the proposed research topic which should not be more than 5 pages long. The concept note must include the following;
    • Introduction
    • Problem statement
    • Research objective
    • Preliminary literature review
    • Methodology
    • references 
  7. Sample academic writing i.e. publications, conference reports, etc which adhere to the broad conventions of academic publishing (i.e. contain an up-to-date review of relevant literature, a description of relevant research methods and an evaluation of results, etc.) and which identify the applicant as a significant contributor (maximum of 30 pages);
  8. A letter from  an academic referee at postgraduate level and A letter from a professional referee;
  9. A detailed latest CV. 

Please note that PhD and MPhil candidates may apply for placement at any time of the academic year.

3.MASTER OF SCIENCE IN SUSTAINABLE ENGINEERING MANAGEMENT (MSEM)

The programme has pathways in Facilities and Water. Applicants for the Facilities pathway must have Bachelor’s degree with a strong pass of and average of 55% - 59%  plus 2 years of working experience at graduate level in any of the following; Engineering, Urban and District Planning, Architecture and relevant Applied Science. 

Applicants for the Water pathway must have a Bachelor’s degree with a strong Pass of 55% and above plus 3 years of working experience at graduate level in Engineering and relevant Applied Science. 

Successful applicants will be required to pay a tuition fee of US$6,500 (Paid in Malawi Kwacha equivalent) The programme duration is 2 years offered on block release and non-residential basis.

 

4.MASTER OF SCIENCE IN INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT AND MANAGEMENT (IDM)

Applicants to be considered under this programme should have a at least a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Sciences, Engineering, Urban, District and Regional Planning, Architecture and Surveying from any recognised institution of higher learning with at least a distinction  or credit or a strong pass (55% to 59%) plus 2 years of relevant working experience.

Successful applicants will be required to pay a tuition fee of US$6,500 (Paid in Malawi Kwacha equivalent) The programme duration is 2 years offered on block release and non-residential basis.

A complete Masters Programme application MUST INCLUDE: 

  1. A completed application form and CV; 
  2. 1 Academic Reference letter and 1 professional reference letter; 
  3. Certified Academic Transcript; 
  4. Certified copies of original certificates by a commissioner of oath or Lawyers or the Central office (University Office)
  5. A non-refundable application fee of MK10, 000 for Malawian applicants and USD25.00 for international students;
