Since 2018, WASHTED’s presence at Mfera CDSS has made a tangible contribution to the society by making students from low income families proceed with their education, thereby reducing poverty in the community.
By offering scholarships to academically talented but financially disadvantaged students, the Centre has helped remove the financial barriers that often prevent learners from continuing their secondary education. Two of these scholarship recipients have already progressed to university, one at Mzuzu University and another at MUBAS, demonstrating how targeted support can empower young people to break the cycle of poverty.
Additionally, the construction of a girls’ hostel has eased the economic and social challenges of daily commuting for students from low-income families.
The hostel provides a safer and more stable environment conducive to learning.
Together, these initiatives highlight WASHTED’s vital role in poverty reduction through education-based interventions that promote social mobility and create lasting opportunities for the next generation.
