Digital advocacy initiative set to empower rural communities
The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) is committed to promoting digital inclusivity in order to contribute to the social- economic development of the country.

Dr. Goodall Nyirenda, a team member for the Inclusive Digital Transformation in Malawi (IDT4M) project at MUBAS, said this on 9 December, 2025 in Mwanza during an interactive session with the project’s digital literacy advocates.

He said that, as one way of promoting digital inclusivity in the country, the project implementation team established digital advocacy teams at community level to impart digital skills to marginalized members of the society.

He further said that digital advocacy is key in ensuring that rural communities have access to digital skills that can assist them in making financial transactions safely, in an era where many people are falling victim to digital scammers.

‘’As part of the project implementation, we trained these digital advocates who are students at MUBAS, to impart digital skills to people in their communities as one way of promoting digital inclusivity. We want to equip digital skills to small businesses men and women so that they are able to make mobile money transactions or sell their products through digital platforms with ease,’’ said Nyirenda.

Faith Napero, one of the digital advocates, said people in her community have received the digital advocacy initiative with enthusiasm. She said that through the digital skills training that she is offering, many community members are now able to create Google accounts, apply for jobs online and conduct their businesses through social media platforms.

‘’Through this project, we are ensuring that our community members are kept abreast of modern technology trends. Through this initiative, many people have learnt how they can keep their mobile money accounts safe from fraudsters,’’ said Napero.

The IDT4M project is being implemented with financial assistance from the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The project seeks to narrow digital divide, enhance digital governance and promoting digital rights for sustainable development.

The project implementation team also visited Mangochi on 12 December, 2025 to appreciate how the communities there are responding to the digital skills training being offered by the advocates.
