Riana Coetsee, a research management consultant, specialising in skills development of early career researchers and grant proposal support of researchers at all levels. She did her postgraduate studies at the Université de Nantes, France and Stellenbosch University.

1. Group Manager & Head: International & Early Career Research Grants at Stellenbosch University (SU)
2. Interim Regional Manager of the African Office for the European & Developing Countries Clinical Trial Partnership (EDCTP) of the European Union.
3. Executive Director of the South Africa-USA Fulbright Commission.
4. Advisor to the South African Minister of Science and Technology regarding international science and technology collaboration and agreements.

Workshop Objectives:

It is increasingly expected of researchers to generate research funds. To do so, researchers need to acquire grant writing skills or hone the skills they already have. Although funding organisations and their application requirements differ, there are important elements expected by all funding agencies, whether it relates to small or to large grants. These elements will be addressed in the workshop.

Workshop Description:

The following elements will be discussed and practised:

1. The basic structure of a grant proposal (i.e., how to get out of the starting block).
2. How to market your research and strengthen your researcher profile.
3. Why grant proposals fail.
4. Research impact.
5. Peer review processes and how applications are assessed.
6. Common core components of grant proposals.
7. Budget development.
8. Whether all research is fundable and where to look for funding.

Each session will include an interactive activity.

Workshop Outcomes:

Participants will understand the following:

1. How to overcome “writer’s block” when you start writing a grant proposal.
2. What basic and core components a grant application should have to make it competitive.
3. What “peer review” means.
4. Why it is important to indicate impact and what funders mean by it.
5. What pitfalls to avoid when writing a grant proposal.
6. How to approach the budget and what elements to include.
7. How to identify funding opportunities.
