The University Council is the highest governing body of our institution. The University’s Act on Part 3, subsection (9) outlines the composition of the Council which is made up of faculty members, staff and students.

The MUBAS Council

The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) was established through the MUBAS Act No.19 of 2019. The university became operational on 4 May 2020, and its overall governance was entrusted to the MUBAS Council, whose members are appointed by the university’s Chancellor.


Establishment and Incorporation

The Council of the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) is established as a body corporate with perpetual succession and a common seal.


Composition of the Council

The Council consists of:

  1. Chairperson – appointed by the Chancellor.
  2. Vice-Chancellor.
  3. Two independent members – appointed by the Chancellor (at least one must be female).
  4. Two alumni members – nominated by alumni and appointed by the Chancellor (at least one female).
  5. One member – representing special interest groups in the education sector.
  6. One Senate representative – a professor or senior academic staff member.
  7. Two student representatives – nominated by the Students' Representative Council (one postgraduate and at least one female).
  8. Ex officio members: Secretary for Education or representative, Secretary to the Treasury or representative, Comptroller of Statutory Corporations or representative.


Functions of the Council

As provided in the MUBAS Act, the Council is entrusted with various functions and powers relating to the governance of the university. The Council is the governing body of MUBAS with supervisory authority over all affairs of the University.
