Since 2009, the Malawi government shifted its admission policy to prioritize classroom space over bedroom space to increase enrollment. However, MUBAS offers two primary accommodation options for its students: institutional (campus-based) and privately owned facilities in order to support students from low income families to enable them complete their studies. Our central location provides easy access to both options.
University Accommodation
University-managed hostels provide affordable subsidized-rate-per-bed and secure housing for students. Accommodation is allocated through an automated system, and all residents are required to sign a Student Tenancy Agreement before moving in.
Due to limited capacity, students are eligible to stay in University hostels for a maximum of one academic year during their studies. This policy ensures that as many students as possible benefit from on-campus living. Students must reapply for accommodation at the end of each academic year, and applications are reviewed for eligibility.
Key features of University hostels include:
- Five on-campus hostels for both male and female students (two students per room)
- Dedicated off-campus hostels at Chichiri and Poly Alley, primarily for new students
- Accessible facilities for students with special needs
- 24-hour security
- Free Wi-Fi
- Regular cleaning and maintenance

Private Accommodation
In addition to University housing, there are several privately owned hostels and apartments near campus, offering a wide range of options in terms of pricing and amenities. The University maintains strong partnerships with reputable service providers and can guide students toward recommended facilities.
Students are responsible for arranging their own private accommodation directly with providers.
