National Bank of Malawi Chief Executive Officer, Harold Jiya said the donation is part of the bank corporate social responsibilities. Jiya said a responsible corporate citizen, the bank is committed to contributing to the human capital development of the country.
He added that the donation compliments other efforts that the bank is undertaking in promoting education in Malawi.
‘’As a bank we have been awarding best performing students in many universities in this country, apart from that, we also support sporting activities in our universities through the Tertiary Education Students Sports Association of Malawi (TESSAM) and recently we have constructed a number of Early Child Development Centres across the country,‘’ said Jiya.
He added that the donation is also a vote of confidence in the MUBAS’ ability to manage the Endowment Fund prudently.
‘’We call upon the private sector, alumni community and other well-meaning Malawians to join hands in supporting this initiative to ensure that no student drops out of school due to financial challenges,’’ he further said.
Jiya also said NBM is ready to partner with MUBAS to ease student accommodation challenges at the university.
MUBAS Vice- Chancellor Associate Professor Nancy Chitera expressed gratitude to NBM, saying the donation will ease some of the challenges that students are facing at the university.
Chitera said about half of the student population at MUBAS is classified as needy and need financial support to successfully complete their studies. She appealed for more support from organizations and individuals towards the Endowment Fund so that many needy students can benefit.
‘’We are committed to managing this fund with utmost transparency and accountability,’’ said Chitera.
The two organisations also signed a Memorandum of Understanding to ensure sustainability and prudence in the management of the fund.
The MUBAS Endowment Fund as set up in 2023 will officially be launched soon.
