MUBAS Benefits from Blantyre Water Board’s Sustainable Water Treatment System
The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), situated in the heart of Blantyre City, is a proud beneficiary of the Blantyre Water Board’s (BWB) advanced wastewater management and treatment processes. These systems not only ensure the supply of clean and safe water to the university community but also contribute to a healthier and more sustainable environment.

Blantyre City operates a comprehensive underground wastewater collection system that gathers both sanitary and combined sewage from residential, industrial, and institutional areas, including MUBAS.

This wastewater is then conveyed to the city’s wastewater treatment plant, where it undergoes a thorough purification process. The treatment system utilizes a combination of Trickling Filters and Oxidation Ponds; technologies designed to remove contaminants and improve water quality through biological and natural purification processes.

Once treated, the water is safely discharged into nearby rivers, significantly reducing pollution and safeguarding water bodies that support the surrounding ecosystem. The process ensures that effluents leaving the system meet environmental standards, thereby minimizing public health risks and preserving the ecological balance within the Blantyre area.

Importantly, the treatment process also produces sludge, which is further processed and repurposed into organic fertilizer. This byproduct is used to enhance soil fertility in agricultural activities around the region, contributing to a circular economy and sustainable resource utilization.

As a beneficiary of this system, MUBAS enjoys the advantages of reliable sanitation infrastructure, a cleaner environment, and access to sustainably managed water resources. This aligns with the university’s commitment to promoting environmental sustainability and supporting the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal 6: Clean Water and Sanitation.

Through the partnership and benefits derived from the Blantyre Water Board’s initiatives, MUBAS continues to thrive in an environment that prioritizes health, sustainability, and responsible resource management.
