Background

The Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) in partnership with the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI) is implementing a research project called Surg-Water in Thyolo district with funding from Science Foundation Ireland (SFI).

Objectives

  1. The project aims at evaluating the feasibility, effectiveness and adoption of solar water disinfection technology in clinical settings to inform national scale-up.
  2. By using solar water disinfection biotechnology to treat harvested rainwater, the team aims to provide a backup supply to address interruptions in existing water supplies.

The transdisciplinary team is dedicated to developing a sustainable, low-energy solution to address the problem of inadequate access to water in rural healthcare facilities in Malawi. The primary focus is on the needs of mothers and newborn babies as well as the clinicians providing maternal healthcare services.

The project comprises two phases; the concept phase (February to July 2023) and the seed phase (August 2023 to July 2024).

The Project team

Consists of seven members, including MUBAS Co-PI, Associate Professor Christabel Yollanda Kambala, RCSI Team Co-PI, Dr. Jakub Gajewski, and RCSI Team PI Professor Kevin McGuigan.
