Dr. Tamara Annie Chizengo, Head of Open and Distance Electronic Learning at MUBAS disclosed this on 3 February, 2026 during the opening of a two-day MOODLE Learning Management System and Authentic Assessment training at the MUBAS main campus in Blantyre.

Chizengo said the training was organised to help participants fully understand the underpinning principles of ODeL and how best to support students especially when using digital learning materials such as the Modular Object-Oriented Dynamic Learning Environment (MOODLE).

“We want all lecturers and staff members to understand what ODeL really is and how it is delivered using MOODLE. This training will help them how to teach, facilitate and assist students effectively in an online environment since many of us are only familiar with face-face teaching,” she said.

She added that quality assurance remains a top priority at MUBAS. As such, undergoing ODeL training is a requirement for all staff involved in facilitating ODeL classes.

Meanwhile, Lustica Simango, an Associate Lecturer in the Accountancy Department, commended ODeL department for organizing the training, describing it as crucial for effective lesson delivery.

“As an institution, we are moving away from a system where learning depended solely on physical interaction. ODeL allows us to reach students who are far away from campus. With these systems, students can easily access materials on MOODLE and other platforms at their convenience,” said Simango.

The training which was attended by lecturers and other staff members focused on essential skills such as uploading learning materials, conducting quizzes, administering examinations online and effective interaction between students and facilitators.

MUBAS introduced ODeL in 2019, and currently offers the Bachelor of Science in Management Information Systems, Bachelor of education in Business and Computer Studies, Diploma in Procurement and Supply Chain Management and University Certificate in Education.
