On 27 April 2026, students from the Department of Civil Engineering at Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS), under the Innovation of Civil Engineering Society (ICES) with support from staff members of the department, donated assorted items to Blantyre Secondary School (BSS) as one way of giving back to the community.

The donated items included laundry soap, notebooks, toothbrushes, mops, brooms and buckets to support learners’ welfare.

Speaking during the activity, ICES President Samson Namanya said the initiative reflects the students’ commitment to sharing knowledge and contributing positively to society.

Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil Engineering, Dr Peter Mbewe, encouraged the learners to work hard in school and aspire to pursue engineering at MUBAS. He added that the gesture by the ICES students is a demonstration of maturity and responsibility.

“When we instill a giving culture in our students, we are assured of having engineers who will make meaningful contributions to the society” he said.

In his remarks, BSS Head teacher Nixon Kaitano, thanked MUBAS for the support, saying it will improve the student’s learning environment, and empower them to attend classes with renewed focus and energy.

The outreach also featured interactive activities such as drama, music and storytelling.
