The Director of Secondary Education (DSE) in the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, Ruth Samati said this today at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) in Blantyre during the official opening of the Improving Secondary Education in Malawi (ISEM II) training for technical and vocational education teachers.
Samati said the training is critical in strengthening the capacity of teachers and ensuring that education delivery remains relevant and effective.
“This training is very important in the development of teaching professionals in Malawi because it will help teachers to update their knowledge and skills to achieve the Malawi 2063 Agenda,” she said.
Samati added that the programme has come at a crucial time when Malawi is working towards becoming an industrialized, inclusive and knowledge-driven economy in line with Malawi Vision 2063.
Meanwhile, MUBAS Vice Chancellor, Associate Professor Nancy Chitera described continuous professional development as the backbone of a strong education system, saying without it, the education sector would stagnate.
“As a university, the students who come to us are shaped by the teachers in secondary schools. Without continuous professional development, the education system will be dead. We commend the Ministry for this initiative which aligns with Malawi Vision 2063, especially on human capital development and mindset change. As MUBAS, we fully support these efforts and will continue to partner in building a skilled and innovative nation,” she said.
She encouraged participants to fully utilize the training period, both individually and collectively, in order to contribute meaningfully towards national development.
One of the participants, Halton Chokani from Mulanje Secondary School, said the training will help teachers deliver better lessons to learners.
“This training is a refresher course. It will help us recover what we may have missed in our previous training and energizing us to teach better,” he said.
The training which will be facilitated by MUBAS through the Applied Education Department and has drawn participants from various secondary school across the country. It is targeting technical education teachers, and is expected to run up to 11 December 2025.
