Seasoned financial market expert John Robson Kamanga has advised public policy makers and the private sector to embrace evidence-based research in order to develop policies and strategies that would help the country to build a sustainable and resilient economy.

Kamanga who is also Chief Executive Officer of Malawi Stock Exchange, made the call when he presided over the launch of the Inaugural School of Business and Economic Sciences (SOBES) on 5 February, 2026 at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) in Blantyre. He emphasized that the country’s economy can only grow through evidence-based research which is critical in developing actionable policies.

‘’Through this conference we are looking at how the role of research can create an impact in so many areas of economic sustainability, including the environment and governance which are pivotal in creating a resilient and equitable economy for all Malawians,’’ Kamanga said.

He said the research conference provided a platform for close collaboration between the academia and other important stakeholders in the country’s economy such as financial institutions, economists and other professionals.

‘’My plea to the researchers is that they should strive to make their research findings easily understandable for the public policy makers and the industry,’’ added Kamanga.

He further appealed to the medium and small enterprises to list on the Malawi Stock Exchange in order to generate more capital and expand their businesses.

‘’I am also appealing to listed companies to make timely reports of their financial statements to enable citizens to make informed decisions on financial market investments,’’ he said.

Commenting on the conference, MUBAS Deputy Vice-Chancellor Professor Ishmail Kosamu said the university is committed in championing research that brings transformative change to local communities and the country at large. He said the university will continue to share its research findings with the public and policy makers, including the industry in order to find solutions to the numerous challenges that the country is grappling with.

‘’Instead of letting research findings gather dust in office shelves, this conference provides an opportunity for our researchers and innovators to showcase what they are doing in contributing to the social and economic development of the country,’’ said the Deputy Vice-Chancellor.

He said the institution will continue to collaborate with government, the industry and other stake holders in order to share knowledge that can assist in making well informed policies and strategic decisions.

During the conference, Executive Dean for SOBES, Dr. Rabiya Hanif launched the school’s Business and Law Journal which she said will provide a platform for sharing research findings.

The conference was held under the theme ‘’Harnessing Sustainable Prosperity’’, and attracted several paper presentations on finance, economics, law, governance, human resource management, business management, tourism, insurance just to mention a few.
