PIC: Kuwali delivering the lecture
The Chairperson of the African Federation of Institutes of Internal Auditors (AFIIA) and Group Head of Internal Audit at National Insurance Company Limited (NICO Holdings plc), Thokozile Kuwali has urged students at the Malawi University of Business and Applied Sciences (MUBAS) to uphold integrity in their careers.

She made the remarks during a Public Lecture hosted by the Society of Internal Audit Students (SIAS) under the School of Business and Economic Sciences SOBES at the MUBAS, on October 3, 2025.

“As students preparing to enter the industry, you must ensure that you do not participate in corruption in any form,” she advised.

“Corruption harms the nation, it is everyone’s responsibility to fight it, leaders must set the tone from the top, when those in authority reject corruption, others will follow,” she said.

Speaking in an interview, the Executive Dean of the School of Business and Economic Sciences Dr. Rabiya Hanif, underscored the value of collaboration between academia and industry.

“These interactions enrich our teaching and learning process, our students get theory from us, but such engagements make it more real,” she said.

“As MUBAS, we strive to ensure our programmes remain relevant through industry involvement,” she added.

Reflecting on the session, outgoing SIAS Vice President Emmanuel Mpakwe said the lecture has changed his perspective.

“I used to think we could only reduce corruption, but now I believe we can eliminate it if everyone takes responsibility,” he said.

Kuwali delivered the lecture under the theme “The Role of Internal Audit in Eliminating Corruption in Malawi”. The event attracted officials from the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA) Malawi, members of staff and students.
